Mandya: Taking a serious note of the power cut and cable TV disconnection on the day she filed nomination, Mandya’s independent candidate, Sumalatha Ambareesh on Sunday labeled strong allegations that the SP of Mandya has been asked to not allow any power cuts of disconnection of TV channels when CM HD Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil Kumaraswamy will file his nomination from the constituency.

Speaking to reporters at her residence, she alleged that Mandya administration has adopted double standards which is against democratic principles and unconstitutional.

“Why these double standards? Why this injustice with an independent candidate and why special treatment for the son of Chief Minister. It is unfair” she said.

“We had also alleged that the nomination papers filed by Nikhil were not in accordance to the regulations of election. We had objected against and even after that he was allowed to file his nomination papers. Election Commissioner of Mandya and Deputy Commissioner Manjushree who initially expressed concern after our objection, later turned blind eye to our complaint” she alleged.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday to conduct an investigation following allegations that, during a mock poll held in Kasaragod town of Kerala, the electronic voting machines (EVMs) had erroneously registered votes in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The two-judge Supreme Court bench, consisting of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, asked the ECI to inquire into the allegations made by senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, who also represented one of the petitioners seeking court direction to verify the EVMs with VVPATs.

Advocate Bhushan cited on behalf of the petitioners a report on the results of the mock poll held in Kasaragod on Wednesday, April 17, where extra votes were found recorded in favour of the BJP. A media report had also stated that functional errors were noted in at least four EVMs, which registered votes for the BJP faultily, during the mock poll.

Advocate Maninder Singh represented the ECI during the hearing on Thursday morning.
