Tumkur: At least eight persons were killed and 16 others injured when a private bus they were traveling in rammed into a lorry that was parked at the roadside on the highway near Shira on last night.

The deceased have been identified as residents of Pattanayakanahalli’s Savita Somashekar (21), Anusha (7), Ratnamma Kumar (39), Sumalata Lingaraju (21), Girijamma Devaraju (55), Shira Jyothinagar’s Shankar Ishwarappa (38) and Ashwath Narayana (40). Bhutanna, Rangappa, Shanthamma, Bharathi, Yashodhara, Annapoorneshwari, Jyothi, Veerabhadraya, Nanjamma, Padmamma, Kanchamma, Ajayya, Thippeswamy, Nagmani, Ranganatha, and Somashekhar injured in the incident and have been admitted to Tumkur district hospital.

All the passengers traveled to Chowdeshwari Temple in Sigandhoor by a private bus belonging to a travels on May 19. The tragedy occurred on Sunday night when the travelers were returning to their hometown after visiting the temple. The incident happened when the bus was about to reach Shira.

“Driver of the private bus lost the control over the vehicle, following which the bus collided with a truck that was parked near Jai Hind hotel on the left side of the highway. While three persons succumbed to injuries on the spot, five others breathed their last in the hospital, police said.

Latur (PTI): A minor girl was allegedly kidnapped and raped by an 18-year-old man in Latur, leading to the arrest of the main accused and owners of two cafes where the crime occurred on December 4, police said on Saturday.

Police traced the girl within hours of registering the complaint. The accused, identified as Rihan Gulab Shaikh, was arrested based on the girl's complaint. Two others are owners of two cafes where the crime occurred, police said.

 

Police registered a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), POCSO Act, and the Prevention of Atrocities Act, an official said.
