Dehradun/Gairsain: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has announced the abolition of the state Madrasa Board. He has directed all madrasas in Uttarakhand to adopt the curriculum of the Uttarakhand Board of School Education from July 2026 as part of a uniform education policy.
Speaking at an event in Haridwar, Dhami described the decision as a step towards modernising the education system. He said institutions failing to comply with the directive would face closure. He stated that the move is aimed at ensuring equal educational opportunities for students across communities.
The announcement drew support from some religious leaders present at the event, as reported by Maktoob. Swami Chidanand Muni welcomed the decision, saying it would help integrate students into the mainstream while stressing the importance of combining modern education with value-based learning.
Mahant Ravindra Puri also made remarks linking madrasas to social unrest and called for broader action, drawing attention amid the ongoing debate.
Leaders from the Muslim community criticised the move. Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahali termed the decision unlawful. He stated that reforms could have been introduced without dissolving the board, while Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi questioned the necessity of scrapping the existing regulatory framework.
The decision follows the state Cabinet’s approval of the Uttarakhand Minority Educational Institutions Bill, 2025, which proposes extending minority status to institutions run by communities other than Muslims.
