California: Apple has directed at least two of its suppliers to significantly ramp up production of the entry-level iPhone 17 model, following stronger-than-expected pre-orders, Reuters reported on Saturday, citing The Information.

The tech giant has asked suppliers to increase production of the base iPhone 17 by at least 30%, a move that signals more consumers are opting for the $799 entry-level variant over the more expensive Pro models, which start at $1,099 and typically feature upgraded materials, cameras, processors, and displays.

According to the report, Apple this week instructed Luxshare Precision, one of its two major iPhone assemblers in China alongside Foxconn, to raise daily output by about 40% for the standard iPhone 17.

The shift in consumer preference comes as the entry-level iPhone 17, which went on sale on Friday, includes screen and camera features previously reserved for Pro models, effectively narrowing the gap between the standard and premium versions.

While increased sales of the lower-cost iPhone 17 may help defend Apple’s market share, analysts reportedly pointed out that it could also put pressure on profit margins, as the company sells more of its less expensive devices.

Bengaluru (PTI): A fire broke out in a multi-storey commercial building here on Friday evening, following which two people who were trapped on the terrace were safely rescued, officials said.

The incident occurred at around 5.30 pm at a commercial building located on Coles Road, they said.

However, no casualties were reported, officials added.

According to officials, the blaze started on the terrace, where a pantry and storeroom are located. The situation led to panic as the building is located adjacent to a petrol bunk, raising fears of a possible explosion.

Two people trapped on the terrace due to the fire were rescued by a police team along with Fire and Emergency Services personnel, a senior police officer said.

Four fire tenders were pressed into service, and after nearly an hour of intense firefighting, the blaze was brought under control.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, police said, adding that further investigation is underway.
