Redmond, Washington: Eighteen individuals were arrested at Microsoft’s headquarters on Wednesday during a protest over the company’s alleged ties to the Israeli military amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The protests, led by workers, called on the tech giant to immediately sever its business ties with Israel, as reported by the Associated Press (AP).
The protest took place on the second consecutive day of demonstrations at Microsoft’s campus in Redmond, Washington. Unlike the peaceful protest on Tuesday, where around 35 demonstrators peacefully left the premises after being asked, the protesters on Wednesday “resisted and became aggressive” when Microsoft told police they were trespassing, according to the Redmond Police Department.
The protesters also splattered red paint resembling the colour of blood over a landmark sign that bears the company logo and spells Microsoft in big gray letters, added the report.
The protests come after allegations surfaced that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have used Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing platform inappropriately. The accusations reportedly claim that the IDF used Azure to store phone call data gathered through mass surveillance of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.
Microsoft responded by stating that its standard terms of service prohibit such usage and pledged to conduct an urgent review of the matter.
Meanwhile, the Redmond Police Department has not clarified how many of the detained individuals were Microsoft employees, and no injuries have been reported.
