Bengaluru: President of the Karnataka State Contractor’s Association D Kempanna died of heart attack at his residence in Jyothipura, Bengaluru, on Thursday. He was 84.

Kempanna had been in news following his allegation during the earlier Basavaraj Bommai-led BJP government in Karnataka that contractors were forced to pay a 40 per cent commission to officials for the projects. His allegation had made way for heated discussions and debates across the state as well as arguments between political parties prior to the Assembly elections of 2023.

Condoling the demise of Kempanna, Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah posted on his personal ‘X’ account on Thursday, “The news of the death of Kempanna, President of the State Contractor’s Association, is shocking. He had not only brought to light the 40% commission scam during the earlier government’s tenure, which made headlines across the country, but also fought boldly against corruption in contracts. In his death, we have lost a bold fighter who refused to bow before any sort of pressure or enticement. I pray for the departed soul to rest in peace and the bereaved family to have strength to bear the loss.”

Deputy CM DK Shivakumar also offered condolence to Kempanna’s family in his post on his personal ‘X’ account on Thursday. He also recollected Kempanna’s fearless fighting spirit against corruption, calling the Association President as ‘direct and unbiased’ in expressing his views.
