DUBAI: The Gangolli Cricketers UAE have announced the sixth edition of the Gangolli Premier League (GPL 6), which will be held on March 29 at Bejoice Cricket Ground in Sharjah.
The tournament will feature eight franchise teams and will be played in a knockout format. Organisers said players were selected through a structured selection process. Northern Insurance Brokers LLC, owned by Afroz Assadi, is the title sponsor for this edition.
The player selection process was carried out earlier at an event titled “GPL Launching Night” held at Seven Seas Hotel in Dubai. The programme included the unveiling of the tournament trophies and the launch of team jerseys, which were handed over to the respective captains.
Speaking on the occasion, Althaf Khalife and Inaytulla MH from Team GPL explained the tournament format, rules and the selection process. Around 140 registered players took part in the selections, which were conducted by Clevan and Altaf H.
Several members of the Mangaluru and Udupi community in the UAE, including Syed Althaf Mangalore, Wahab Momin, MS Althaf, Nisar Khan, Deepak, Mohamed Shafi Kaup, SM Sawood, Margoob Khan, Menaz and Mutahir MH, were felicitated during the event.
Organisers said the tournament is expected to draw a large number of spectators, especially from the coastal Karnataka diaspora in the UAE.
Althaf Khalife said this year’s edition is being held as a tribute to Mohammed Sameer from Udyavara, who passed away recently following a brief illness. He said Sameer was associated with the GPL organising team and had been actively involved in cricket and community activities. A special tribute programme will be held during the tournament.
The event is expected to be attended by guests including Taj Jamal, Vivek Nayak, Dubai Lok and Ms Althaf, among others.
The participating teams include Team Nafis Farangipet, Vidvar Boys, Al Sitara Friends Udupi, Kundapura PTech Risers, Dimx Blaster Bengaluru, Team Shine Mangalore South, SM Warriors Upper Gangolli and Gangolli Strikers.

Bengaluru (PTI): Power bills for consumers under the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) will go up from May 1, following an order issued by the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) on Friday.
The hike comes after KERC allowed the BESCOM to recover a revenue deficit of Rs 2,068 crore incurred in 2024-25, from the consumers.
As a result, for every unit of electricity consumed in 2024-25, the customers will be charged an additional 56 paise, it said.
"BESCOM shall calculate, for each of the active consumers of FY2024-25 the amount to be recovered based on their actual energy consumption during FY2024-25. Such amount shall be recovered during FY 2026-27 in equal monthly instalments, to be called as 'FY25 True up Charges', commencing from the first meter reading date falling on or after 1 May 2026 and concluding with the reading date ending on 30 April 2027," the order said.
"It is further ordered that BESCOM shall maintain a separate head of account, allocated for the purpose, to record the adjustment of the said amount to ensure full recovery of the deficit," it added.
Similarly Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (CESC) has also recorded a revenue deficit of Rs 121.71 crore and can collect an additional 15 paisa per unit for consumption in 2024-25, official sources said.
