2 Armymen, 3 Cops Arrested For Allegedly Smuggling 15 kg Gold In Bengal
ALIPURDUAR: An Army intelligence officer and an Sub-Divisional Police Officer were among five uniformed personnel arrested Saturday in this district of West Bengal in connection with alleged gold smuggling from Bhutan, the police said.
The arrested included intelligence officer of Hasimara Army Camp Lt Col Pawan Brahma and Jaigaon Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Aniruddh Thakur, they said.
It is alleged that the five were involved in taking away 15 kg of gold being smuggled in a vehicle carrying a large quantity of the precious metal from Bhutan. They had intercepted the vehicle at the Hasimara area on September 10.
The three other persons arrested in the case were sub-inspectors of Hasimara and Barovisa police outposts Satyendranath Roy and Kamalendu Narayan and Army intelligence constable Dasarath Singh.
The five were charged under various IPC sections, including 202 (intentional omission to give information of offence by person bound to inform) and 213 (taking gift to screen an offender), the police said.
The arrests were made after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed unhappiness over smuggling in border areas Friday, sources said.

RR beat RCB by six wickets in IPL
Guwahati (PTI): Blistering fifties by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Dhruv Jurel powered Rajasthan Royals to a six-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their IPL match here on Friday.
Sent in to bat, RCB rode on a fighting half-century by skipper Rajat Patidar (63) to post 201 for 8.
Virat Kohli (32), Romario Shepherd (22) and Venkatesh Iyer (29) also chipped in with useful contributions.
In reply, Sooryavanshi (78 off 26 balls) and Dhruv Jurel (81 not out off 43 balls) shared a 37-ball 108-run partnership for the second wicket to set the platform. Krunal Pandya (2/30) tried to bring them back with back-to-back wickets.
But Jurel, in the company of Ravindra Jadeja (24), completed the task with another 68-run stand, with two overs to spare.
For RR, Jofra Archer (2/33), Ravi Bishnoi (2/32) and Brijesh Sharma (2/37) took two wickets.
