New Delhi: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) announced on Sunday that it will oppose any attempts to reduce or restrict the powers of Waqf boards.

In a press statement, AIMPLB stated that it will not accept any changes to the Waqf Act, 2013 that alter the nature of Waqf properties or make it easier for the government or individuals to take control of them.

The board referred to reports indicating that the Centre plans to introduce around 40 amendments to the Waqf Act, 2013. AIMPLB believes these amendments aim to change the status and nature of Waqf properties, making it easier for the government to possess them.

"According to reports, a Bill of this nature may be introduced in the Parliament next week. The Muslim Personal Law Board clarified that Waqf properties are donations made by Muslim philanthropists for religious and charitable purposes. The government has only enacted the Waqf Act to regulate them," the press release said.

AIMPLB emphasized that the Waqf Act and Waqf properties are protected by the Constitution and the Shariat Application Act, 1937. The board asserted that the government cannot make any amendments that would alter the nature and status of these properties.

"Muslims would never accept any amendment to the Waqf Act that would change its status. Similarly, interference with the legal and judicial status and powers of Waqf Boards will not be tolerated," it added.
