Baripada (Odisha), Oct 5: A pregnant woman died on the way from one hospital to another, as the ambulance carrying her ran out of fuel in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, an official said on Saturday.

The 23-year-old tribal woman who was in an advanced stage of pregnancy was admitted to a government hospital in Bangiriposi.

However, the doctors there referred her to another hospital at Baripada on Friday night as the condition Tulasi Munda has become critical, the sources said.

"The ambulance stopped near Kuliana as it ran out of fuel. We have to wait for more than an hour on the road till another vehicle could be arranged for the forward journey," said Tulasi's husband Chittranjan Munda.

He said though an ASHA worker was accompanying his wife, she was also helpless in that situation.

"Finally, another ambulance was arranged and she was taken to Baripada hospital. By the time we reached the hospital, my wife had died," Chittaranjan said.

Chief District Medical Officer of Mayurbhanj, PK Mohapatra, admitted that the ambulance could not reach its destination because of insufficient fuel.

The CDMO claimed that the ambulance had enough fuel when it started its journey to Baripada, but it ran out of fuel due to breakage in the oil pipe.

He said the matter will be inquired by the district authorities.

Bengaluru (PTI): Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Thursday reduced the size of his official convoy to the minimum required strength following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's austerity call.

In a post on 'X', the Lok Bhavan said Gehlot had taken the step in response to the Prime Minister's appeal for fuel conservation and reduction in foreign exchange expenditure amid the West Asia crisis.

"Hon'ble Governor of Karnataka Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot has reduced his convoy to the minimum required strength, following Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji's appeal," the post said.

The move comes days after Modi, while addressing a rally organised by the BJP in Hyderabad, called for several measures aimed at conserving foreign exchange and reducing dependence on imports amid tensions in West Asia.

The Prime Minister had urged citizens to reduce petrol and diesel consumption, use metro rail services in cities, adopt carpooling, increase the use of electric vehicles and utilise railway services for parcel transportation. He had also suggested working from home wherever possible to conserve fuel and foreign exchange.

Modi further appealed to people to postpone the purchase of gold and foreign travel for one year, reduce edible oil consumption, lower dependence on chemical fertilisers and promote natural farming and swadeshi products to strengthen self-reliance and conserve foreign exchange.
