New Delhi, : Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, highlighted the importance of liberty and freedom during India's 78th Independence Day celebrations. Drawing parallels between India’s decision to embrace freedom in 1950 and recent developments in Bangladesh, he stressed on the precious nature of these values.
In his speech, CJI Chandrachud urged citizens to appreciate the hard-won liberty and not take it for granted. He reflected on the sacrifices made by freedom fighters like Babasaheb Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru, and others who gave up their legal careers to join the struggle for independence. Their contributions were pivotal not only in securing India's freedom but also in establishing a strong and independent judiciary.
Chandrachud also shared insights from his 24-year tenure as a judge, emphasizing the judiciary’s role in addressing the struggles of ordinary Indians seeking justice. He stressed the need for modern, accessible, and inclusive judicial infrastructure, which he believes is essential for upholding the judiciary’s responsibility towards citizens.
