Bangladesh 'leaderless' with weak government, rising mafia: Mamata Banerjee
Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed grave concerns over the situation in Bangladesh, describing the nation as "leaderless" due to a surge in mafia activity and a weak government. Speaking in an interview with News18 Bangla, Banerjee urged the Indian central government to act swiftly to ensure peace and stability in the neighbouring country.
Highlighting the interconnectedness between the two regions, Banerjee warned that unrest in Bangladesh could impact Indian states like Bihar and Odisha. She underscored the shared cultural and linguistic ties between West Bengal and Bangladesh, urging peaceful coexistence.
Last week, the Chief Minister appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government to request UN peacekeeping intervention in Bangladesh. However, this proposal elicited a strong reaction from Bangladesh. Banerjee clarified that while she refrains from interfering in international matters, she expects the Centre to prioritise bilateral efforts to restore peace.
She also criticised the lack of a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on the situation in Bangladesh, stating that earlier governments regularly addressed such issues in Parliament. She called on the External Affairs Minister to issue a formal response during the ongoing parliamentary session.
Additionally, Banerjee raised concerns about 69 Bengali fishermen detained in Bangladeshi prisons for two months amidst the unrest. She noted that despite legal assistance provided by her government, the fishermen's families remain anxious due to a lack of action from the Centre. Meanwhile, she highlighted a recent humanitarian act by West Bengal, rescuing Bangladeshi fishermen after a trawler capsized and ensuring their safe return home.

Dakshina Kannada: Two girls drown while bathing near Kolyadakatta dam in Kadaba
Mangaluru: Two girl students drowned while bathing near the Kolyadakatta dam area of the Gundya river on Friday evening here in the Kadaba Taluk of the district.
The deceased have been identified as Arpita (15) and Sunita (21), both residents of Vimalagiri in Kutrupadi village.
According to reports, five girl students had visited the river along with their friends as it was a holiday. While bathing in the river, the two students reportedly entered a deeper portion of the water without realising the depth and began drowning.
Those accompanying them tried to rescue the duo, but were unsuccessful, leading to the tragedy.
After receiving information about the incident, Kadaba Police Station personnel visited the spot and conducted an inspection. The bodies were later recovered with the help of local residents.
