Bhopal: BJP legislator from Bhind Narendra Singh Kushwaha was summoned by the party leadership and reprimanded for nearly assaulting Bhind Collector Sanjeev Srivastava three days ago.
Kushwaha, who was reportedly called by the BJP Madhya Pradesh President Hemant Khandelwal, arrived at the residence of the State General Secretary Hitanand Sharma on Friday. BJP State In-charge Dr. Mahendra Singh is learned to have been present at the meeting at Sharma’s house, where the incident was reviewed, according to a report by NDTV.
The party leaders, who took a serious view of the legislator’s behavior, have warned Kushwaha that such conduct would not be tolerated, adding that it was against the party line, sources have said.
Kushwaha, nevertheless, is said to have urged the party leadership to get the collector transferred from Bhind. The BJP organization, however, has drawn a firm red line and the stern warning to Kushwaha on Friday underlines the leadership's attempt to enforce discipline.
On Wednesday, the BJP MLA, accompanied by a group of farmers who were protesting against shortage of fertilizer, is known to have stormed into the collector’s official residence. As Collector Srivastava asked Kushwaha to stay within his limits, and also refused to permit illegal sand mining in the district, an argument broke out between the MLA and the officer.
Eye-witnesses have said that Kushwaha abused Srivastava and also made an attempt to strike him but was restrained by the officer’s bodyguard. The legislator’s supporters also staged a protest outside Srivastava’s house, calling him a thief.
The tension was eased out with the intervention from the Chief Minister’s Office.
Members of the Madhya Pradesh IAS Officers’ Association have condemned the incident, calling it “humiliating and dangerous.” The MP Third Class Employees’ Union also expressed solidarity, warning that public servants cannot work “under fear.”
The Madhya Pradesh unit of the BJP has been struggling with unruly behaviour among its MPs and their relatives. With the protest of the IAS association, the incident is learned to have become both a political and administrative flashpoint, testing the party's ability to balance discipline within its ranks against pressure from its legislators
