Patna: In a key move ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday announced 35% reservation for women who are permanent residents of the state in all categories and levels of government jobs.

The decision was approved during a Cabinet meeting chaired by the Chief Minister in Patna. “There will be 35% reservation exclusively for women candidates who are original residents of Bihar in direct recruitment to all categories and types of posts in state government services,” said Kumar.

Taking to social media, the CM stated that the step is aimed at ensuring greater participation of women in governance and public services.

The Cabinet also cleared the formation of a new statutory body, the Bihar Youth Commission, which will advise the state government on matters concerning youth welfare and empowerment. The commission will comprise a chairperson, two vice-chairpersons, and seven members, all below 45 years of age.

The Commission is tasked with ensuring better access to education and employment for local youth, prioritising their recruitment in the private sector, and protecting the interests of Bihari students and workers living outside the state. It will also recommend measures to tackle social issues such as alcohol and drug abuse.

The Nitish Kumar-led government said these initiatives are intended to make Bihar’s youth more skilled, self-reliant, and employment-ready.
