New Delhi: Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during his address on the Union Budget 2024 in the Lok Sabha today.
During his Lok Sabha address, Gandhi drew a parallel between the current national situation and the Mahabharata’s Chakravyuha formation. "Thousands of years ago, in Kurukshetra, six people trapped Abhimanyu in a 'Chakravyuh' and killed him. I did some research and found out that 'Chakravyuh' is also known as 'Padmavyuh' - which means 'Lotus formation'. In the 21st century, a new 'Chakravyuh' has been formed - that too in the form of a Lotus. The Prime Minister wears its symbol on his chest. What was done with Abhimanyu, is being done with India - the youth, farmers, women, small and medium businesses... Today, too, there are six people at the center of this 'Chakravyuh' - Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Mohan Bhagwat, Ajit Doval, Ambani, and Adani," he said.
Following Speaker Om Birla's intervention, Gandhi offered to omit some names, but emphasized his criticism of Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and Mohan Bhagwat.
Gandhi also highlighted the atmosphere of fear pervading the country. "There's an atmosphere of fear in India, and that fear has pervaded every part of our country. In the BJP, only one man is allowed to dream of being the PM. This fear has been spread throughout the country. The question I ask myself is, why is this fear spreading so deeply?" he questioned.
Additionally, Gandhi criticized Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for not addressing the issue of paper leaks in her Budget speech, alleging that there have been 70 cases of paper leaks in the past 10 years.
Sources within Congress had indicated that party MPs believe Gandhi, as the Leader of the Opposition, should be the one to address the House on such significant matters.
In a prior meeting with Congress Lok Sabha MPs, Rahul Gandhi had expressed that he had spoken during the special session of Parliament and suggested that other members should also have the opportunity to speak. However, party MPs insisted that Gandhi’s address would have a significant impact given his position, leading to his decision to speak today.
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi criticized the Union Budget presented on Tuesday, calling it an attack on India's federal structure. "This budget is an attack on the dignity of India's federal structure - in the greed to save power, there is neglect of other states, there is discrimination against them," he said in a Facebook post.
Gandhi also participated in an INDIA bloc protest against the Budget at the Parliament complex on Friday.

Bengaluru (PTI): BJP leader R Ashoka on Friday claimed that the ongoing power struggle between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy D K Shivakumar has created massive confusion in Karnataka.
He remarked that the proverb “when two people fight, the third one benefits” has come true, as AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge is also now making efforts to become Chief Minister.
Speaking to reporters here, Ashoka said the entire government has turned into a house of confusion due to the alleged power tussle.
Kharge’s new statement has only added to the chaos, he said.
Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge had on Friday said that no date has been fixed yet to discuss possible leadership change in Karnataka.
This came a day after Kharge said there was no change of CM in Karnataka "for now" and that the leadership issue in the state would be resolved soon.
The BJP leader said that Kharge too has aspirations and that he was cheated earlier.
"Perhaps he has received a green signal from the Congress high command to become CM. Everyone is already saying Kharge should become CM. Kharge himself has declared, “I am ready to become CM.” Despite many attempts in the past, he never became CM. Now he is trying to seize the opportunity," the Leader of Opposition in the state assembly said.
According to him, the situation in Congress has perfectly become a case of “two people fighting, third one benefits.”
