New Delhi: A day after the Bharatiya Janata Party lost in the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly Elections 2019, senior party leader Subramanian Swamy has sounded a warning for the top leadership.
Swamy warned that the Indian economy was in a dire state and BJP-mukt Bharat could become a reality if something substantial was not done. He hit out at the advisors of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for keeping him in the dark about the economy.
“BJP-mukt Bharat – it might soon become a reality if we don’t do anything to do get the economy straight. I don’t know who are the advisors of PM, but they are not telling him the truth,” Swamy was quoted as saying.
In the Jharkhand election results announced on Monday, the incumbent BJP lost, winning just 25 of the 81 seats that went to polls. The opposition JMM-Congress-RJD alliance won 47 seats. JMM working president Hemant Soren is expected to be the next state chief minister.
The loss in Jharkhand has come in the wake of setbacks in Maharashtra and Haryana. In Haryana, the BJP returned to power in alliance with JJP after falling short of the majority. In Maharashtra, its pre-poll alliance partner Shiv Sena changed sides to form the government with NCP and Congress.
It may be recalled that the BJP had earlier given a call for Congress-mukt Bharat. And it had marched forward on the path, removing the Congress party from power in many states, including in the Northeast.
The BJP leader, meanwhile, hit out at the Congress party for protesting against the CAA. Swamy pointed out that the Congress itself had pitched the idea for CAA and NRC.
“If it’s a law brought by the Centre, then every state has to follow it. Congress has been talking about CAA and NRC for long. If we look at the speeches of (former PM) Manmohan Singh, it is clear that they wanted NRC and now they are protesting against it,” Swamy said.
Commenting on the chorus in the Congress party for bringing back Rahul Gandhi as its president, Swamy said if the move happens, “it will be good for us”.

United Nations (PTI): Targeting commercial shipping, endangering civilian crew and impeding freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is "unacceptable", India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Parvathaneni Harish has said.
Harish's remarks at a special meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UNECOSOC) on safeguarding energy and supply flows came days after an India-flagged commercial vessel came under attack off the coast of Oman.
Omani authorities rescued all 14 crew members of the vessel sailing from Somalia, but it was not immediately known who carried out the strike.
In a post on X on Sunday, Harish said that at the UNECOSOC meeting, he shared India's approach to the recent energy and fertiliser crisis caused by the West Asia conflict.
"A combination of short-term and structural measures alongside international cooperation are essential to respond to the crisis," he said.
"Reiterated that targeting of commercial shipping, endangering civilian crew and impeding freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, are unacceptable. International law in this regard must be fully respected," he added.
The attack on the India-flagged vessel on May 13 took place amid the fragile situation in the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway close to the coast of Oman through which roughly one-fifth of the world's energy supplies pass.
It has been severely disrupted by the conflict in West Asia that started on February 28, with the US and Israel launching joint attacks on Iran, triggering retaliatory strikes.
Earlier, India had described the attack as "unacceptable".
At least two other Indian-flagged ships have been attacked since the conflict broke out.
According to the UNECOSOC website, the meeting, which took place on Friday, focused on “Safeguarding energy and supply flows: Supporting global development through international cooperation”.
