Visakhapatnam: Three people are reported to have died on the spot and three others sustained serious injuries as a gas cylinder used for welding at a scrap shop near the fishing harbor in the city exploded on Wednesday.
The bodies of the victims were scattered due to the intensity of the explosion. Some could not be identified as they were highly damaged, reports India Today.
Police, fire brigade and rescue teams, who were informed of the incident by the locals, rushed to the harbor and undertook the rescue operations. The cause for the explosion is also being probed by the officers, although initial reports suggest that the blast was due to a defect in the cylinder used for welding.
The families of the accident victims have been informed of the matter by the police. The injured men are being treated at a nearby hospital.
Former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has expressed shock over the incident and expressed condolence to the bereaved families. He has asked the Andhra Pradesh government to ensure immediate and high-quality medical care for the injured. He has also urged the government to provide comprehensive support to the families of the victims.

Bengaluru: Karnataka High Court has issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following the filing of application by Congress MLA Vinay Kulkarni and Chandrashekhar Indi challenging the life imprisonment awarded to them by the Special Court for murder of BJP Dharwad leader Yogish Gowda.
The divisional bench comprising Justices Muhammad Nawaz and T Venkatesh Naik heard the pleas filed by Kulkarni on April 15 and Chandrashekhar Indi also called Chandu Mama on April 16.
The bench has now issued a notice to the CBI and also directed the HC Registry to obtain the trial court documents before adjourning the hearing.
