Delhi HC frees Activist Gautam Navlakha from house arrest, says detention ‘untenable’
New Delhi, Oct 1: The Delhi High Court on Monday ordered the release of human rights activist Gautam Navlakha from house arrest, saying his detention was "untenable" under law.
A bench of justices S. Muralidhar and Vinod Goel also set aside a lower court order allowing the Maharashtra Police to take Navlakha to Pune.
The high court bench, however, said that the Maharashtra Police is free to begin fresh proceedings in the matter against Navlakha, as per legal provisions.
Navlakha was among the five rights activists arrested by the Maharashtra Police in a series of raids across the country on August 28 for their alleged links with a banned Maoist group.
Navlakha was arrested from his residence in south Delhi's Nehru Enclave and presented before a magistrate's court here, which allowed the police to present him before a court in Pune.
Subsequently, the high court directed the Maharashtra Police not to take Navlakha out of Delhi and keep him under house arrest until further orders.
The Supreme Court had on September 29 rejected a plea for immediate release of the five rights activists, held in connection with the Koregaon-Bhima violence case for alleged Maoist links.

RCB beat MI by 18 runs after batters fire
Mumbai (PTI): Royal Challengers Bengaluru skipper Rajat Patidar, Phil Salt and Virat Kohli blasted half-centuries as the defending champions beat Mumbai Indians by 18 runs in an Indian Premier League match here on Sunday.
Salt (78 off 36 balls) and Kohli (50 off 38 balls) stitched together a 120-run stand for the opening wicket before Patidar scored a rapid 53 off just 20 balls as RCB posted 240 for 4.
In response, Mumbai Indians were restricted to 222 for 5, with RCB spinner Suyash Sharma (2/47) putting the skids on the home side with a double strike in the eighth over, from which they could not recover.
Sherfane Rutherford top-scored for MI with an unbeaten 71 off 31 balls.
While opener Rohit Sharma appeared to be struggling with a hamstring issue and had to retire hurt on 19, his partner Ryan Rickelton made 37, while Suryakumar Yadav (33) and Hardik Pandya (40) were the other contributors for MI.
