Guwahati: Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has dismissed the BJP's attack on his wife’s foreign citizenship and her past work in Pakistan, stating that such allegations resurface before elections.

BJP leader and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with other party leaders, questioned Elizabeth Gogoi’s British citizenship and her work with the Climate Development and Knowledge Network (CDKN), Asia, between 2011 and 2015, which included a stint in Pakistan. Sarma, in a post on X, criticised the fact that a lawmaker’s spouse has retained foreign citizenship for 12 years, stating that “loyalty to the nation must always take precedence.”

In response, Gaurav Gogoi dismissed the remarks, pointing out that similar allegations were made during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. “These issues usually surface just before elections. The BJP has already started, even though the Assam assembly polls are a year away,” he told reporters.

Gogoi expressed confidence in the public’s judgment, asserting that such narratives are politically motivated.
