Bengaluru: Starting Monday, September 22, the prices of several dairy products, including ghee, butter, cheese, and ice cream. will become cheaper, following a reduction in GST rates announced by the Union government. However, the prices of milk and curd will remain unchanged.
Officials from the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) met on Friday to assess the impact of the revised tax structure and explore ways to pass on the benefit to consumers.
“The 12% GST on items like ghee, cheese and savouries will be reduced to 5% and ice creams, muffins, cakes, cookies and chocolates that earlier had 18% GST will now attract 5%,” The New Indian Express quoted KMF Managing Director B. Shivaswamy as saying.
There will be no revision in milk and curd prices, as milk continues to be GST-free, and curd retains its 5% GST rate. Shivaswamy clarified that this will not affect farmers, since procurement charges remain unchanged. “The milk prices were earlier increased by Rs 4 per litre. There will be no revision in the near future,” he added.
The rate of ultra high temperature milk (packaged in pouches like Goodlife), however, has been reduced as GST will come down from 5% to zero.
The official also noted that some confusion regarding the GST on curd had arisen but was clarified. “The matter was also discussed with the Union ministry before deciding not to change the cost of curds,” the official added.

Washington: US President Donald Trump has said he has not yet considered whether he would continue the ceasefire involving Iran, while also claiming the United States holds the advantage in negotiations.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said he was prepared to make a deal with “whoever is running the show” in Iran.
“They are fighting with each other, there’s tremendous infighting. They’re probably fighting for leadership in many cases. I think they’re fighting not to be leader because we knocked out two levels of leaders,” he said.
Trump added, “When they want they can call me. We have all the cards, we’ve won everything.”
Referring to ongoing negotiations, he said, “They gave us a paper that should’ve been better. And, interestingly, immediately when I cancelled it [envoy trip to Pakistan], within 10 minutes we got a new paper that was much better.”
“We talked about they will not have a nuclear weapon, very simple … They offered a lot, but not enough,” he added.
When asked whether he would continue the ceasefire, Trump replied, “I haven’t even thought about it.”
The remarks come as uncertainty remains over the future of the temporary truce and broader negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
