Chennai: The Madras High Court has permitted the acquisition of land belonging to Rathina Vinayagar Temple and Durgai Amman Temple for the Chennai Metro Rail project, stating that such an acquisition is justified if it benefits devotees. The court dismissed a PIL challenging the move, ruling that religious institutions are not exempt from land acquisition for public projects.

However, the court quashed Chennai Metro Rail Limited's (CMRL) acquisition notice against United India Insurance, which owns land on Anna Salai. The company had moved the court after CMRL attempted to acquire its land despite previously granting a no-objection certificate (NOC) for the construction of its head office. The court held that CMRL’s action violated principles of natural justice, as the company had invested ₹250 crore in developing the site based on the NOC.

Justice N Anand Venkatesh criticised CMRL for attempting to take over the insurance company’s land without proper notice and ruled that the acquisition could not proceed.
