Gujarat attacks a very dangerous trend: Mamata Banerjee
Kolkata, Oct 9: West Bengal Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday described the attacks on Hindi-speaking migrants in Gujarat as a "very dangerous trend" and accused the BJP government in the state of failing to control it.
"This (the attacks) is a very dangerous trend. A disastrous situation. The problem is very serious ... I do not understand why the BJP (government in Gujarat) is not controlling it," the chief minister told reporters at the secretariat.
"There was of course provocation behind the act. The people are scared and are fleeing the state. There are so many families staying there for many years and now they have chosen that state as their home. All the people are scared. I am also scared," she said.
Banerjee, a strident critic of the BJP, alleged that the party is only creating confusion and communal tension among people.
Since the alleged rape of a 14-month-old girl in Sabarkantha district on September 28, six districts, most of them in north Gujarat, have witnessed sporadic incidents of violence against Hindi-speaking people.
Police have arrested Ravindra Sahu, a labourer hailing from Bihar and working in a local ceramic factory, for the alleged rape.

Air quality worsens in city, AQI settles in 'severe' zone
New Delhi (PTI): Delhi battled toxic fumes on Sunday as the air quality slipped into the 'severe category with a reading of 459, according to the Central Pollution Control Board.
A thick layer of smog blanketed the city overnight, leaving people gasping for air.
As per the CPCB, an Air Quality Index (AQI) between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 to 100 'satisfactory', 101 to 200 'moderate', 201 to 300 'poor', 301 to 400 'very poor' and 401 to 500 'severe'.
On the weather front, the minimum temperature settled at 8.2 degrees Celsius, 0.4 notch below the season's average, and the maximum temperature is likely to hover around 24 degrees Celsius.
The relative humidity was 100 per cent at 8.30 am, the IMD said.
