New York: India was among 158 nations that voted in favour of a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution calling for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The resolution also reiterated the demand for the unconditional release of all hostages.
The UNGA adopted the resolution titled "Demand for ceasefire in Gaza," introduced by Indonesia, during its 10th emergency special session. While nine nations, including Israel and the United States, opposed the resolution, 13 member-states abstained.
The resolution calls for adherence to international law and humanitarian obligations, urging the immediate facilitation of humanitarian aid to the civilian population of Gaza. It emphasises providing access to basic services and relief to all those in need, particularly civilians in the besieged northern regions of Gaza.
Furthermore, it reaffirms the two-state solution, advocating for a peaceful coexistence of Israel and Palestine within secure and recognised borders, as per international law and UN resolutions. The resolution opposes any demographic or territorial changes to the Gaza Strip and stresses unification under the Palestinian Authority.
Earlier this month, India supported another UNGA resolution calling for Israel's withdrawal from Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, and reiterated its commitment to a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
