Kargil war veteran Mohammad Sanaullah released from detention centre in Assam
Guwahati, Jun 8: Kargil war veteran Md Sanaullah, who was last month declared a 'foreigner' by a tribunal in Assam, walked out of A detention centre on Saturday, a day after the Gauhati High Court granted him bail.
Shortly after his release, Sanaullah was taken to the office of the Kamrup Superintendent of Police at Amingaon to complete formalities, as per the directions of the court, a senior official said.
Later in the day, his family members and well-wishers escorted him to his home in the Boko area of the district, the official added.
A division bench of the high court Friday heard a writ petition along with the Interlocutory Application filed by Sanaullah's lawyers and granted him bail on two local sureties of Rs 20,000 each.
The bench ruled that Sanaullah cannot leave Kamrup district, of which he is a resident, without the permission of its superintendent of police.
The court also issued notices on respondents, including the Central government, the Assam government, the Foreigners' Tribunal at Boko, the NRC authorities, the election department and the then inquiry officer Chandramal Das ( now retired), who verified his documents.
The tribunal at Boko had declared 52-year-old Sanaullah a 'foreigner' on May 23 and sent him to the detention centre at Goalpara.
The war veteran, who retired from the Army in 2017, was awarded the President's Medal in 2014.
A resident of Kolohikash village in Boko of Kamrup district, Sanaullah was serving as a sub-inspector in the Assam Border Police before being declared a 'foreigner' and dismissed from the service.

Four booked for tying 18-year-old to tree, beating him up in UP's Pratapgarh
Pratapgarh (UP) (PTI): Four people were booked here for the abduction and assault of a man who they allegedly tied to a tree and beat up, police said on Wednesday.
The incident, a video of which has gone viral, took place on Tuesday afternoon under the Kunda police station limits.
The FIR was registered on Wednesday evening based on a complaint from the victim's father.
According to Keshav Prasad Yadav, a resident of Mauli village, some people called his 18-year-old son Nikhil Yadav on the phone and asked him to come out of his house around 2.30 pm on Tuesday.
As he reached outside the village as instructed, the accused allegedly forced him into a car and took him towards the Tinpedwa forest area, where they tied him to a tree and assaulted, the complainant said.
The attackers also recorded a video of the incident and circulated it on social media. The purported video shows the men thrashing Nikhil one after another, while one of them is assumed to have recorded the act.
Kunda Station House Officer Manoj Pandey confirmed the incident and said efforts are underway to identify and arrest all the accused.
Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has shared the video on social media, describing the incident as reflective of a "dominant mindset" against the PDA (Pichda or Backward, Dalit, and Alpasankhyak or Minority), and demanded strict action against the accused.
