Kolkata: Tensions continue to simmer at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, following an incident in which unidentified miscreants vandalized the premises. The vandalism occurred late Wednesday night, during ongoing protests against the alleged rape and murder of a female doctor at the hospital last week.

The Kolkata Police reported that approximately 40 individuals, disguised as protestors, forcibly entered the hospital premises, damaging property and attacking police personnel with stones. In response, the police deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd. Several vehicles, including a police vehicle, were damaged, and some officers were injured during the unrest.

Following the incident, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal visited the site and expressed his concerns over the role of the media in the ongoing situation. Goyal asserted that a "malicious media campaign" had been responsible for worsening public sentiment and undermining the efforts of the Kolkata Police.

"What have the police not done to crack this case? But there has been a malicious media campaign that has been going on," Goyal stated. He refuted allegations that the accused had political connections, urging the public not to believe the rumors being spread.

The investigation into the doctor’s death has been transferred to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court, following public outcry and concerns about the handling of the case by the local authorities. A civic volunteer associated with the West Bengal Police has already been arrested in connection with the crime.

"Bodies of all four workers were dug out of debris during a rescue operation," Putki police station in-charge Waqar Hussain told PTI.

The incident took place when coal slurry was being loaded into trucks by workers, during which a large chunk of slurry fell and trapped several workers underneath, officials said.

Meanwhile, the family members of the deceased and local villagers placed the bodies in front of the washery gate and began a protest.
