Ratnagiri: In a horrifying incident, a 19-year-old nursing student was allegedly sexually assaulted by an auto driver in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district. The victim was found unconscious and severely injured near Champak Ground.

According to a report by News 18, police officials mentioned that the nursing student booked an auto from her college to go home when the driver assaulted her. The report added that the driver allegedly offered the victim spiked water, which caused her to lose consciousness. He then took her to a secluded location and raped her.

The victim regained consciousness and immediately contacted her family, who alerted the authorities. She has been shifted to state-run hospital for treatment.

The incident has triggered widespread protests from the nursing community, local residents, and hospital staff. These demonstrations, which took place in various parts of Ratnagiri, resulted in traffic disruptions. Authorities have called for peace while assuring the public that the investigation is being prioritised.

The police have filed a case and started the investigation to identify and apprehend the suspect. They are using CCTV footage to aid in their search for the driver.

The incident comes amid public outrage over the recent rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee medic at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, as well as the alleged sexual assault of two young girls at a school in Maharashtra’s Badlapur.

Raichur (Karnataka) (PTI): Fire broke out near the stage of the mass marriage event that was attended by Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar here, police said on Sunday.

Nobody was affected, and the fire was immediately put out, they said.

The fire was noticed shortly after Shivakumar and other dignitaries left the stage, and Forest Minister Eshwaran Khandre was speaking to the media at the venue in Sindhanur, officials said.

According to officials, wires, speakers, and cloth materials near the stage caught fire, allegedly due to a short circuit.

Police personnel present at the spot quickly swung into action and extinguished the fire.

The programme was halted for some time and resumed later, they said.

Several ministers, legislators and political leaders from the region, and actor Sudeep had attended the event.
