Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of enrolling fake voters from Haryana and Gujarat to influence elections in Delhi and Maharashtra. She also questioned the impartiality of the Election Commission (EC) and criticised the appointment of Gyanesh Kumar as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).

Speaking at a Trinamool Congress (TMC) meeting in Kolkata, Banerjee stated that fair elections would not be possible without an impartial poll body. She warned of an indefinite protest outside the EC’s office if corrective measures were not taken.

"If I could go on a 26-day hunger strike in 2006, we can also stage a movement against the Election Commission. If needed, we will hold an indefinite dharna to demand corrections in voter rolls and the removal of fake electors," she said.

Banerjee further alleged that the BJP, with the support of the EC, was ensuring the enrolment of fake voters in various districts of West Bengal. She asserted that TMC would identify such voters and prevent outsiders from influencing Bengal’s elections.

Referring to the Delhi Assembly polls, where the BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats, Banerjee said, "What BJP has done in Delhi cannot be repeated in Bengal."

Her remarks come amid heightened political tensions in the state as both TMC and BJP prepare for upcoming elections.
