VIJAYAWADA: A man was electrocuted after his mobile phone that he was speaking on while it was connected to a charger got burnt due to suspected high voltage at Vagupalli under Kanigiri mandal in Prakasham district.

The deceased was identified as Changu Mastan Reddy (31), who lived alone and was physically challenged, police said.

Kanigiri sub-inspector U Srinivasulu told TOI that Mastan Reddy was seen lying dead on the floor by neighbours late on Monday night after they were alerted due to the burning smell of electric wires. "They noticed Mastan Reddy lying on the ground with his mobile phone in his left hand. He was taken to hospital, where he was declared brought dead due to electrocution. He lived alone on a monthly pension of Rs 1,000 from the government under the disabled category. Both of his parents died a few years ago," the SI said.

According to the police, there was no clarity on the make of the mobile. Kanigiri inspector M Subbarao said the phone was badly burnt rendering its make impossible to find out, but added that the back case of a Samsung mobile phone was found near Mastan Reddy’s body. SI Srinivasulu, who is the IO, said: "We are not sure about the phone manufacturer but it was definitely not a smart phone. It looks like one of those old Nokia keypad phones."

He also said that short circuit was a result of high voltage supply as two other incidents were reported in which ceiling fans got damaged due to high voltage at the same time in the village. A case has been booked under Section 174 CrPC and investigation is still underway.

Mumbai (PTI): Police have arrested a man and seized over 500 grams of heroin worth Rs 2.54 crore in the illicit market from him in Mumbai, officials said on Friday.

The police's Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) made the drug seizure in Santacruz in the western suburbs. The operation was conducted by the Kandivali unit of the ANC on Thursday as part of a special crackdown against drug trafficking in the area, they said.

Acting on specific inputs, an ANC team conducted a raid in Santacruz (East) and intercepted a man. During a search, the team recovered 508 grams of high-grade heroin from his possession, an official said.

The seized contraband, a highly addictive, opioid drug derived from morphine, is estimated to be worth Rs 2.54 crore in the international market, he informed.

Following the seizure, a case was registered against the man under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and he was formally placed under arrest in the early hours of Friday.

The police are currently investigating the source of the drug and trying to identify the intended recipients of the consignment, he said.
