Madhya Pradesh, August 21: A special court in Madhya Pradesh, on Tuesday, 21 August, awarded death sentence to two men for the rape and attempted murder of a seven-year-old girl in Mandsaur. The men were convicted by the court earlier in the day.

Following the verdict, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Vinay Dubela tried hitting one of the convicts.

What Happened

The two men, Irfan and Asif, raped and attempted to murder the girl by slitting her throat in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur on the evening of 26 June. The first accused, 20-year-old Irfan alias Bhaiyu, was arrested on 27 June, a police official told PTI.

“Irfan abducted the seven-year-old on 26 June, when she was waiting for her family outside her school. He took her to the bus stand and raped her in the bushes near Laxman Darwaja,” Mandsaur SP Manoj Kumar Singh had told reporters.

It was only later that the police got to know of Asif’s involvement in the crime.

He was apprehended on 29 June, based on Irfan’s testimony. Additional superintendent of police SS Kanesh told PTI that Asif, a construction worker, had admitted to raping the girl.

The matter came to light when the minor’s grandfather reportedly went to pick her up from school, but was informed that she had already left. On being unable to find her, her parents lodged a complaint, following which probe was initiated.

The Mandsaur District Bar Association (MDBA) had announced that no lawyer would represent the two accused in the case.

Local residents had also protested against the horrific crime, demanding a death sentence for the two men.
