New Delhi: In a landmark move, the Opposition on Tuesday initiated a no-confidence motion against Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, marking the first such action in India’s parliamentary history.

The motion, reportedly signed by 65 members of the Opposition, comes amid allegations that Dhankhar, in his capacity as presiding officer, has denied members the opportunity to express their views in the House.

Despite the Opposition's efforts, the motion is expected to fail due to the numerical strength of the ruling coalition in the Rajya Sabha. Earlier, in August, the Opposition had considered moving a similar motion against Dhankhar.

Tuesday’s Rajya Sabha proceedings witnessed disruptions as the BJP accused the Congress of collaborating with billionaire investor George Soros to harm national interests. The session was adjourned within hours.
