New Delhi: More than 250 organisations and civil society activists across 22 states have raised their voices against the proposed "Dharm Sansad" scheduled for December 19 in Uttar Pradesh. In an open letter to the President, the groups have urged the Central government to intervene and prevent the event, citing its involvement with individuals accused of hate speech and incitement to violence.
The letter highlights the involvement of controversial figures such as Yati Narsinghanand, Rakesh Tomar, and Darshan Bharati, who are reportedly organising the event. These individuals, already charged with multiple hate crimes and violent acts, have not faced action despite violating bail conditions. The activists condemned the inaction of the Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh governments in holding these figures accountable.
The December 2021 "Dharm Sansad" in Haridwar, which included similar calls for violence, had already attracted widespread condemnation from national and international bodies, including retired military officials, judges, and opposition parties. The event tarnished India's global reputation, with concerns about the potential for violence and genocide.
The letter also references a prior appeal made in October by 101 retired senior government officials, urging the government to halt the event. However, no action was taken.
The activists have called on the President to direct the Central government to ensure the event does not take place, to instruct the state governments to cancel the bail of accused individuals, and to ensure compliance with Supreme Court orders on hate crimes. Additionally, they have demanded compensation for victims of violence related to hate speeches.
The organisations and individuals signing the letter include prominent groups such as AFDR, AICCTU, AISF, and APCR, along with over 190 activists.
