New Delhi: A parliamentary panel is set to discuss the issue of social media regulations following controversy over influencer Ranveer Allahbadia’s remarks on parents and sex during a comedy show. The matter was also raised in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, with calls for stricter guidelines on digital content.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has summoned Allahbadia and other content creators involved in the show, including Samay Raina, Apoorva Makhija, Jaspreet Singh, and Ashish Chanchlani, along with producers Tushar Poojari and Saurabh Bothra, to appear before it on February 17. Women and Child Development Minister Annpurna Devi stated that the ministry would seek a report from the NCW regarding the issue.
The parliamentary committee on communications and information technology is expected to discuss the matter in its meeting on February 13. While some members have pushed for action against Allahbadia’s "vulgar" comments, he may not be summoned before the panel. The influencer has apologised for his remarks.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, a member of the committee, said she would raise concerns over "vulgar, blasphemous content being passed off as comedy." Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske also urged for stricter regulations on content across social media, podcasts, and OTT platforms.
The NCW, in a statement, condemned the remarks, stating that such comments violate the dignity and respect of individuals and have sparked widespread public outrage.

Sumathi assumed charge as the Malkajgiri Police Commissioner on May 1.
On the same night, the senior IPS officer, in plainclothes, moved through the streets of Dilsukhnagar here, standing alone for some time to get a first-hand knowledge of law and order situation, official sources said on Wednesday.
"It was a general checking and she later interacted with police officials," they said.
The sources said about 30-40 individuals who approached her were counselled regarding their behaviour towards women in public places.
