Bhavnagar: The Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Sunday demolished part of the Madrasa-e-Islami Sarvajanik Trust building in the city for encroaching upon a road constructed under a town planning (TP) scheme.

Authorities said that the demolition took place smoothly, with senior officials and district police overseeing the action.

Bhavnagar Municipal Commissioner Narender Kumar Meena stated that the madrasa’s structure was obstructing a 24-metre-wide TP road. “A final order of removal of the portion of the building was passed two years ago after hearing the madrasa authorities and the matter has gone to High Court, but there was no stay order against demolition from the HC,” The Indian Express quoted Meena as saying.

Only the boundary wall and some residential parts of the madrasa have been demolished, Meena added.

Soon after the announcement, jubilant Satheesan supporters burst firecrackers and distributed sweets in several parts of the state.

Paravur in Ernakulam district, the Assembly constituency he has represented since 2001, witnessed large-scale celebrations.

Satheesan was widely seen as the frontrunner for the post, with UDF allies also backing his candidature during the selection process.

As the Leader of the Opposition in the outgoing Assembly, he led the UDF both inside and outside the House.

Apart from Satheesan, senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala and Congress MP K C Venugopal were also considered for the post.
