PM Modi chairs CCS meet on Nepal, appeals for peace
New Delhi (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security to discuss developments in Nepal, where violent protests have toppled the government headed by K P Sharma Oli, and stressed that stability, peace and prosperity of the country are of utmost importance to India.
Modi said the violence in Nepal, in which at least 19 people have lost their lives, is heart-rending and appealed to "my brothers and sisters in Nepal to support peace".
He called a meeting of the CCS on his return from a tour of flood-hit Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.
Modi said, "The violence in Nepal is heart-rending. I am anguished that many young people have lost their lives. The stability, peace and prosperity of Nepal are of utmost importance to us. I humbly appeal to all my brothers and sisters in Nepal to support peace."
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar are among the CCS members besides the prime minister.
Nepal is reeling under a serious crisis as Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli resigned in the face of massive protests for the second day with demonstrators storming many government buildings and setting Parliament as well as homes of several high-profile leaders ablaze, a day after 19 people died in violence.
The protest led by students under the banner of "Gen Z" that began against a government ban on social media expanded into a larger campaign reflecting growing public criticism of the Oli dispensation and the country's political elite over alleged corruption and apathy towards the common people.

Woman throws 18-month-old daughter in drain in Faridabad: Police
Faridabad (PTI): A woman allegedly killed her 18-month-old child - her sixth daughter - by throwing her into a drain in Faridabad, claiming she committed the crime as she was unable to take care of her family due to poverty, according to police.
The incident occurred near Dheeraj Nagar on April 23 when the girl's body was found stuck in an iron mesh along a drain by two school children, the police said on Sunday, adding the body was retrieved and sent for a postmortem.
A Crime Branch team, which was probing the case, found CCTV footage showing the girl's mother carrying her in her arms in the area. She then returned alone. The police took the woman into custody, and during questioning, she confessed to throwing the girl into the drain, they said.
The infant died of drowning.
The accused was identified as Neelam, a native of Madhubani in Bihar. She lived in Faridabad with her husband Sanjay, who works in a private firm, the police said.
A senior investigating officer said that during interrogation, the woman said that the deceased was the youngest of her six daughters and that she was driven to commit the crime due to poverty.
"She revealed that her family's financial situation was extremely poor, and with six daughters, she was unable to raise them properly," the officer said.
Police spokesperson Yashpal said they are investigating the matter and the entire picture will be clear soon.
