President, PM condole Kuldip Nayar's death
New Delhi, Aug 23 : President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday condoled the death of veteran journalist Kuldip Nayar, remembering his "strong stand" against the Emergency, public service and commitment to a better India.
Nayar breathed his last at the Escorts Hospital here at 12.30 a.m. He was 95.
"Sad to hear of the passing of Kuldip Nayar, veteran editor and writer, diplomat and parliamentarian, and a determined champion of democracy during the Emergency. His readers will miss him. Condolences to his family and associates," the President tweeted.
Expressing his condolence, Modi tweeted: "Kuldip Nayar was an intellectual giant of our times. Frank and fearless in his views, his work spanned across many decades.
"His strong stand against the emergency, public service and commitment to a better India will always remembered. Saddened by his demise. My condolences."
Nayar started his career with a Urdu newspaper and was the author of 15 books including "Beyond the Lines", "India after Nehru" and "Emergency Retold".
Nayar's cremation will take place at 1 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.

Odisha: Two girls drown while bathing in village pond
Berhampur (Odisha) (PTI): Two girls drowned while bathing in a village pond in Odisha's Ganjam district on Tuesday, police said.
The deceased were identified as Pranjali Dora (11), a class 6 student, and Manini Dora (12), a student of class 7, both residents of Patanda village in Digapahandi police station area, a police officer said.
After returning home from school, they went to the village pond to take a bath like every other day. However, they slipped and fell into deep waters. Locals noticed them drowning and tried to rescue them but failed, he said.
Fire brigade personnel from Digapahandi retrieved the girls after a two-hour search and they were rushed to a nearby community health centre, where doctors declared them dead, Digapahandi police station officer-in-charge Kishor Kumar Samal said.
He said the bodies have been handed over to the respective families after conducting post-mortem examinations at MKCG Medical College and Hospital here.
He said unnatural death cases have been registered and an investigation launched.
