New Delhi, Aug 23 : Congress on Thursday said Rafale scam has exposed how Prime Minister Narendra Modi allowed his crony friends to loot the nation and noted that there is an atmosphere of fear, which is curbing freedom of speech in the country, apart from the "unprecedented lynching movement".

The party also slammed the government for promising the moon to the people in 2022 with Prime Minister Narendra Modi back in the election mode.

It also took a dig at the government for compromising India's national security citing how three policemen in Jammu and Kashmir were killed by terrorists.

Congress spokesperson R.P.N. Singh said: "An agenda-less, aimless and achievement-less BJP is trying to clutch at straws by covering its massive failures by building a desperate narrative." said Singh.

"Mood of the nation reflects that Modi's popularity is dipping. There are no jobs for the youth. Disaster of demonetisation has spelt doom for our economy. GDP figures testify that.

The leader said: "Beti Bachao' has become ‘Bhajpa Se Beti Bachao'. Naliya, Unnao and Kathua are stark examples how BJP leaders are involved in such gruesome incidents.

"Girls and women in the country are far from secured. We have seen the heart wrenching incidents which happened in home shelters in BJP-ruled states - Muzarffarpur, Patna, Deoria, Pratapgarh, Hardoi and Bhopal," he added.

Singh said: "BJP has compromised our national security and has betrayed both our soldiers and the people of Jammu and Kashmir by creating a precarious situation in the state. Doklam issue is far from resolved and China is building military infrastructure to hurt our strategic interests."

He said there is an unprecedented ‘lynching movement' which is taking place in India, which the BJP and its fringe outlets are actively abetting and aiding.

"Under the Narendra Modi government, there is an atmosphere of fear, which is curbing the freedom of speech. Those who ask questions, seek accountability from this government are been given legal notices to ‘resist and desist," said Singh.

"Editors are being removed. The fourth estate is being damaged. Freedoms are being curbed," he said.

"Nothing will deter the Congress to seek Modi Govt's accountability and expose who are indulging in looting of public money," he added.

New Delhi (PTI): National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has condemned the alleged rape and murder of a four-year-old girl in Maharashtra's Pune, calling it "deeply distressing" and a "blot on humanity".

The girl was allegedly raped and killed by a 65-year-old labourer, who has a criminal record, in Bhor tehsil of Pune on Friday. The accused allegedly lured the child to a cattle enclosure on the pretext of giving her food. After raping her, he killed her by hitting her with a stone, according to police.

The accused has been arrested.

In a post on X on Saturday, Rahatkar said the incident in the Nasrapur area in Pune was heartbreaking and has shaken society.

"The brutal torture and murder of a four-year-old innocent girl in Nasrapur (Bhor, Pune) is deeply painful, heartbreaking, and shocking. It is a blot on humanity," she said.

She said Pune Rural police has arrested the accused and noted that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar have assured strict action in the case.

Rahatkar said the NCW has taken cognisance of the matter and written to the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), requesting the body to ensure necessary and prompt action.

It has also been recommended that the case be pursued under stringent provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and be closely monitored from the filing of the chargesheet to proceedings in a fast-track special court to ensure time-bound justice, she added.

Ensuring justice for the victim and stringent punishment for the accused is a collective responsibility, the NCW chairperson underlined.

In a post on X, the NCW said it has taken suo motu cognisance of the extremely "heinous" incident.

"This heinous crime causes profound pain and outrage, and it highlights serious concerns regarding the safety of young girls," it said.

Strongly condemning this grave "inhuman act", the NCW said such crimes constitute a serious violation of children's rights and raise questions about society's security system.
