New Delhi: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut has claimed that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is signalling Prime Minister Narendra Modi to retire upon turning 75.
“The rule of retirement at 75 was made by Modi and the RSS itself. I believe the RSS is repeatedly advising Modi that he should now retire and hand over the country to safe hands,” Raut said on Thursday, as quoted by Deccan Chronicle.
His remarks came after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, while launching an English book on senior RSS leader Moropant Pingle in Nagpur, recalled Pingle’s statement that a person should step aside at the age of 75 and allow others to take charge. Bhagwat said, “Moropant Pingle taught the RSS to work without propaganda and to retire after seventy-five years.”
Taking a jibe at Modi, Raut added, “PM Modi forced retirement on veteran leaders like Lal Krishna Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Jaswant Singh, and others after they turned 75. Now let’s see if Modi follows it for himself.”
In April, Modi visited the RSS headquarters in Nagpur for the first time since becoming Prime Minister in 2014. Following that visit, Raut had predicted that Modi would step down in September and that his successor would be from Maharashtra. He had also claimed that the RSS had called Modi to discuss the issue of succession.
Modi will turn 75 on September 17 this year.
