New Delhi: The Supreme Court has issued notice to the accused and others in the murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh, seeking detailed responses from them, after hearing a petition filed by the victim's sister Kavita Lankesh for cancellation of the bail granted to Mohan Nayak, who is one of the accused in the case.

The 55-year-old journalist, who was the editor of the Kannada tabloid 'Lankesh Patrike', was shot dead outside her house in Bengaluru on September 5, 2017. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) is probing the case and the police have arrested 17 accused, Nayak being the 11th accused in the case.

The two-judge bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Satish Chandra Sharma, issued the order recently after hearing the petition where Kavita has sought direction from the apex court in the matter of the bail granted to Nayak by the Karnataka High Court on December 7, 2023. Nayak, who had been accused of having been a part of the criminal conspiracy to murder Gauri Lankesh, was the first of the arrested to be granted bail in the case.

In its order on December 2023, the High Court cited the delay in the case trial to grant bail to Nayak. It also said that the charges under the Karnataka Control of Organised Crime Act (KCOCA) against Nayak attracted neither a death sentence nor a life sentence, forcing the High Court to grant Nayak bail in the case. The High Court had also said that Nayak had been in custody for more than five years.
