New Delhi: The Supreme Court today dismissed the bail plea of suspended Janata Dal (Secular) leader Prajwal Revanna, who is facing charges of rape and sexual assault. A bench comprising Justices Bela M. Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma presided over the hearing.

Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Revanna, argued that s. 376 IPC (rape) was not cited in the original complaint. However, Justice Trivedi noted that multiple complaints were filed against Revanna. Rohatgi stated that a chargesheet had now been submitted, adding that he had surrendered upon returning to India after a period abroad.

Following brief submissions, Justice Trivedi declared the plea dismissed. When Rohatgi sought permission to approach the court again in six months, the bench declined to comment further.

The Karnataka High Court previously denied both regular and anticipatory bail applications on October 21. Earlier, a single judge bench of Justice M. Nagaprasanna had reserved its decision on these pleas after hearing arguments.

Revanna faces several charges, including s. 376(2)(n) (repeated rape), s. 376(2)(k) (rape while in a position of authority), s. 506 (criminal intimidation), s. 354(a) (sexual harassment), s. 354(b) (assault with intent to disrobe), s. 354(c) (voyeurism) under the Indian Penal Code, along with s. 66E of the Information Technology Act (violation of privacy).

ISLAMABAD: At least two more cases of poliovirus were reported in Pakistan, taking the number of infections to 52 so far this year, a report said on Friday.

“The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health has confirmed the detection of two more wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases in Pakistan," an official statement said.

The fresh infections — a boy and a girl — were reported from the Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

“Genetic sequencing of the samples collected from the children is underway," the statement read. Dera Ismail Khan, one of the seven polio-endemic districts of southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has reported five polio cases so far this year.

Of the 52 cases in the country this year, 24 are from Balochistan, 13 from Sindh, 13 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and one each from Punjab and Islamabad.

There is no cure for polio. Only multiple doses of the oral polio vaccine and completion of the routine vaccination schedule for all children under the age of five can keep them protected.
