Mumbai: Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad, affiliated with the Eknath Shinde-led faction of the party, has sparked controversy after assaulting a canteen worker at the MLA Hostel in Mumbai late Tuesday night. The incident reportedly occurred after Gaikwad was allegedly served stale food in his room, including sour dal.

Gaikwad, who represents the Buldhana constituency, stormed into the hostel canteen dressed in a towel and vest, and confronted the staff in a heated exchange. He then resorted to physical violence and slapped the canteen operator.

Justifying his actions further, the MLA alleged that the canteen has been serving unhygienic food for years. “Their chicken and egg stocks are days old. They are playing with the health of thousands of people every day. And when people complain, they don't listen," claimed Gaikwad.

The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi slammed the BJP-led Maha Yuti government and have urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to take action against the MLA.

However, Gaikwad remained unapologetic about his actions. "I am an MLA and a warrior too. I have no regrets over what I did. I am a public representative… when someone fails to understand democratic language then I have to use this language. I had complained to concerned authorities on several occasions. I don’t regret it and I will repeat it if needed” he asserted.

He further said that he will raise the matter in the ongoing Maharashtra legislative session.

Following the incident, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut said, "If this is true why there has been no action."

NCP (SP) national spokesperson Clyde Crasto also condemned the incident, calling it "shameful gundagiri." He added, “Just because he is a part of the incumbent Maharashtra government, does he think he is above the law?”
