Patna: A 17-year-old speech-impaired boy was allegedly beaten to death following a dispute while watching the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final between India and New Zealand on a mobile phone in Bihar’s Vaishali district, police said.

According to a report by Times of India, the incident occurred on Sunday evening in Jakkopur village under Mahnar police station limits. The victim, Kundan Kumar, son of farmer Brijkishor Rai, was a resident of Ward No. 18 in the village and the youngest among four siblings.

Police said a group of teenagers had gathered to watch the match on a cellphone when an argument broke out among them. During the game, when India lost a wicket, Kundan reportedly shouted. Another youth allegedly interpreted this as celebrating the dismissal, leading to a heated exchange that escalated into a physical altercation.

Kundan’s mother said her son had gone out earlier in the evening and later joined the group watching the match. She alleged that one of the boys asked him to leave the spot, but he remained there. When he reacted after India’s first wicket fell, he was allegedly assaulted, resulting in severe head injuries.

Mahnar Sub-Divisional Police Officer Praveen Kumar told Times of India that the assault took place during a dispute between two youths while watching the match. “During the altercation, Kundan fell on a stone after being pushed, which caused serious injuries. He was being taken to PMCH for treatment but succumbed to his injuries on the way,” he said.

The injured boy was initially taken to the Mahnar Community Health Centre and later referred to Hajipur Sadar Hospital. He was subsequently referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital but died on the way in the early hours of Monday.

Police have identified the accused as Kisan Kumar (17), a resident of the same village. A forensic team has inspected the spot and collected evidence. Police said two teams have been formed to trace and arrest the accused.

Mumbai (PTI): The Strait of Hormuz disruptions have caused severe economic impact and energy instability in the region, Indian Navy chief Admiral D K Tripathi said on Thursday amid the war in West Asia.

Speaking at an event where INS Sunayna, an offshore patrol vessel, set sail from Mumbai as Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) Sagar, the admiral said competition at sea has no longer remained confined to oil and energy.

It is now expanding towards resources that will shape future growth - such as rare earth elements, critical minerals, new fishing grounds and even data, he said.

The West Asia crisis began on February 28 after a joint attack by the US and Israel on Iran.

Iran's strikes on its neighbours along with its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz have disrupted the world's energy supplies with effects far beyond West Asia.

"With the conflict in West Asia well into its fifth week, the disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have caused severe economic impact and energy instability in the region," Tripathi said.

There is significant increase in the marine survey, deep-sea research activity, and Illegal Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUU), often encroaching upon the sovereign rights of littoral nations and exploiting gaps in monitoring and enforcement, he said.

Alongside these, threats such as piracy, armed robbery and narco-trafficking backed by unimpeded access of advanced technology to non-state actors, have also become more complex and challenging to counter, the Navy chief pointed out.

Last year alone, the Indian Ocean Region witnessed a staggering 3,700 maritime incidents of varying nature, the admiral said.

Additionally, narcotics seizures in the region exceeded USD 1 billion USD in 2025, highlighting the persistence and spread of such challenges in the region, he said.
