JIND: The momentum of support for Neelam Verma (37), the woman involved in the recent Parliament security breach incident, continues to grow. A day after farmers' unions and some khap panchayats expressed their solidarity, additional farmer organizations and khap groups from the Bangar area joined the chorus of support.

Various entities, including Chahal khap, Kandel khap, Sarva Jatiya Khap, Bharatiya Kisan Union, and social organizations, held a protest in Jind city on Friday.

During the protest, participants raised slogans against the government and submitted a memorandum to Pankaj Kumar, the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM), urging the release of Neelam Verma. The demonstrators marched through the town to the DC office, chanting, "Neelam beti ko riha karo" (release daughter Neelam), and warned of intensifying their movement if she is not released.

Jaideep Chahal, BKU state president, addressed the media, asserting that Neelam had raised a legitimate concern about youth unemployment and had done nothing wrong. He criticized the imposition of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and emphasized that the youth are facing depression and resorting to extreme measures due to government negligence. The protestors demanded the removal of UAPA and Neelam's release.

Protestors highlighted that Jind district leads in unemployment in Haryana, with over 50,000 youths registered with the district employment exchange. They called for addressing the real issue of jobless youths instead of branding them as terrorists.

Meanwhile, Neelam's parents reported a visit from individuals claiming to be officials of an investigation agency. The visitors reportedly searched the house and left after taking contact numbers.

Saharsa (PTI): More than 150 children were taken ill after allegedly consuming food that was part of the mid-day meal in a school in Bihar’s Saharsa district, a senior official said on Thursday.

The incident occurred at a middle school in Baluaha village of the district.

The official said that 115 children were undergoing treatment at the Sadar Hospital, while around 50 students were admitted to Mahishi Public Health Centre.

“We received information that several children fell ill after consuming the mid-day meal in Baluaha. The children were initially treated at the primary health centre, but later, many were referred to the Sadar Hospital,” Saharsa District Magistrate Deepesh Kumar told reporters.

“According to doctors, the health condition of the children has improved, but they will be kept under observation for some time. There is no need to panic. Some kids are having mild fever. They are being treated accordingly,” Kumar said.

Meanwhile, family members of some children claimed that a snake was found in the container in which cooked pulses was stored at the school.

Of the 545 students present in the school, 200 had already eaten their meals by the time the snake was spotted, and later complained of stomach ache and vomiting, they said.

Regarding the claims, the DM said food samples have been collected from the school.

“We will be able to comment on this only after the results of the tested samples arrive,” he said.
