Suspects involved in looting properties of Manipur ministers, MLAs identified: CM
Imphal (PTI): Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Friday said that suspects involved in looting the properties of ministers and MLAs during protests on November 16 were identified and legal actions initiated.
He condemned incidents like torching the photograph of a minister’s late father in his house, looting the residence of an MLA and firing inside a car showroom, and wondered whether these could be part of any agitation.
“In the name of democratic movement, some gangs have looted and burnt the residences of ministers and MLAs. Suspects have been identified through CCTV and appropriate legal actions have been initiated. I feel ashamed to publicly to say that such things are happening in Manipur,” Singh told reporters.
Urging people not to get involved in any activities that led to suspension of internet, the chief minister said, “Do not blame the government only. We need to correct ourselves as well.”
He said he has no objections against anyone who genuinely protested against the killing of children and women in Jiribam district.
“But those politically motivated gangs who took advantage of the situation, we will take legal action (against them),” Singh said.
Had not CRPF gunned down 10 or 11 militants in Jiribam, some 100 civilians would have been killed on November 11 since the attackers wanted to over run a relief camp in Borobekra and a police station, the CM claimed.
So, the steps taken by the central forces should be appreciated, Singh said.
"When the situation improves, we will make sure to lift suspension on (mobile) internet. Operations are on to apprehend the attackers. Though the NIA is also handling the case of the killing of innocents in Jiribam, the state government is not silent. We are also looking for them. The government will seek to protect lives and properties of civilians," Singh said.
Manipur has seen a fresh wave of protests after six people – three Meitei women and three children - went missing from a camp for displaced persons in Jiribam last week, following a gunfight between armed men and security forces that resulted in the deaths of 10 Kuki youths.
More than 220 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence between Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and adjoining hills-based Kuki-Zo groups since May last year.
The CM also slammed Congress leader P Chidambaram for advocating for regional autonomy in an X post, which he later deleted.
To a question on Rahul Gandhi urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to arrest of industrialist Gautam Adani in the backdrop of charges of bribery and fraud against the Adani group in the US, Singh alleged that America is trying to pull down India.
“Will India do what the US says? The allegations are baseless," he said.

Cristiano Ronaldo scores his 100th Saudi Pro League goal
Riyadh (AP): Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 100th Saudi Pro League goal as Al-Nassr beat Al-Shabab 4-2 to move five points clear at the top of the table.
The 41-year-old forward converted a Sadio Mané cross at the near post with 15 minutes remaining to record the 971st goal of his career on Thursday. It was also his 26th league goal of the season.
“Ronaldo is always dangerous going forward and we saw that again today,” Al-Nassr coach Jorge Jesus said.
João Félix, signed from Chelsea in July, scored three goals for the league leaders.
The win took Al-Nassr to 82 points from 32 games, five ahead of Al-Hilal, which has three matches, one more than Nassr, left to play. Al-Hilal meets Al-Kholood on Friday and faces Nassr on Tuesday in what could be a title decider against its Riyadh rival.
“Now we have a derby match against our rival, which is a difficult encounter,” Jesus said.
“We are fully aware of its importance, and we are dealing with it with complete focus as we know that small details could decide the result.”
Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, has yet to secure a major trophy in Saudi Arabia since signing with Al-Nassr in December 2022.
