Thanjavur: A 26-year-old teacher, Ramani, was fatally stabbed on the Mallipattinam Government Higher Secondary School campus on Wednesday morning. The accused, Madhan (30), allegedly committed the crime after she rejected his proposal to marriage without her parents' permission.
According to police, Madhan and his family had recently approached Ramani’s family with a marriage proposal, but Ramani's parents were not interested. Enraged by the rejection, Madhan reportedly entered the school premises at around 10:10 a.m. and attacked Ramani near the teachers’ room, inflicting severe injuries on her neck and stomach. She was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. Madhan was arrested by Sethubhavachatram police and has been remanded in judicial custody. Both the victim and the accused hailed from Chinnamanai in the district.
The school authorities have submitted a report to the District Education Office, detailing the incident. Ramani, who was appointed as a temporary graduate teacher in June to teach Tamil to students of Classes VI to IX, had been dedicated to her role.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced ₹5 lakh in relief for Ramani’s family and expressed his condolences. “She dedicated herself to teaching students in rural areas. Her death is an irreparable loss,” he stated.
School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi condemned the attack, assuring strict action against the perpetrator. He announced psychological counselling sessions for students and staff, which will begin on Monday, with the school remaining closed until the weekend.
The Tamil Nadu High and Higher Secondary School Headmasters Association has called for enhanced protection for government school teachers.
The incident has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and other political figures blamed the State government for lapses in law and order. TMC (Moopanar) president G.K. Vasan urged the government to ensure the safety of teachers, students, and other school staff, suggesting stricter visitor regulations and additional staffing.
