Telecom has revived, now among fastest growing sectors: Modi
New Delhi, Sep 20 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the country's telecom sector has revived from its period of "darkness" and is among the fastest growing sectors in the country.
Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the India International Convention and Expo Centre here, he remarked that with the sector currently witnessing growth, India is moving towards 5G network infrastructure.
"The country's telecom sector has come out of the darkness that prevailed 5-6 years ago," the Prime Minister said, adding that it is currently among the fastest growing sectors in the country.
The telecom sector had received a jolt after the revelation of the alleged 2G scam in the year 2010, and the 122 licenses issued in 2008 were subsequently cancelled.
Further, the established players in the market received another big hit with the entry of Reliance Jio in 2016 in the 4G segment with significantly low tariffs.
Describing the current market scenario, Modi said that voice calls now are almost free and the 1 GB of 4G data is available at Rs 19-20, as compared to the previous range of Rs 250-300.
"So, the common man has received the power of Internet and the industry now has new opportunities for business."

KSRTC to run 1000 special services to clear Christmas rush
Bengaluru: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation will operate 1000 additional special services in view of the Christmas festival.
In addition to the existing schedule, the special services will run on 19.12.2025, 20.12.2025 and 24.12.2025. Further, special buses will be operated from various places of intra & Interstate places to Bengaluru on 26.12.2025 & 28.12.2025.
Special buses will be exclusively operated from Bengaluru Kempegowda Bus Station to Dharmastala, Kukkesubramanya, Shivamogga, Hassan, Mangaluru, Kundapura, Shringeri, Horanadu, Davangere, Hubbali, Dharwad, Belagavi, Vijayapura, Gokarna, Sirsi, Karwar, Raichur, Kalaburagi, Ballari, Koppala, Yadgir, Bidar, Tirupathi, Vijayawada, Hyderabad and other places.

Special buses from Mysuru Road Bus Station will be exclusively operated towards Mysuru, Hunsur, Piriyapatna, Virajpet, Kushalanagar, Madikeri.
The corporation has also announced a discount of 5 per cent on the fare if four or more passengers book tickets under a single reservation. A discount of 10 per cent will be extended on return journey tickets if onward and return tickets are booked simultaneously.
In addition to the above, special buses will be operated from all Taluk/District Bus Stands in the jurisdiction of KSRTC based on the traffic needs.
