TN Assembly polls: Over 17 per cent voter turnout recorded till 9 am
Chennai (PTI): Polling in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections saw a turnout of over 17 per cent after the first two hours of voting on Thursday.
According to Election Commission (EC) figures, polling till 9 am recorded a turnout of 17.51 per cent.
About 1.1 crore voters exercised their franchise till 9 am, the EC said.
Chennai recorded 16.51 per cent polling, Madurai - 17.08 per cent, Coimbatore - 18.45 per cent and Tiruchirappalli - 17.99 per cent.
At Kolathur Assembly constituency, where Chief Minister M K Stalin is contesting, saw 17.51 polling till 9 am and at Chepauk - 15.70 per cent. Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin is contesting from Chepauk Assembly constituency.
Similarly, Edappadi constituency recorded 19.04 per cent, where AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami is contesting.
In Trichy East, where Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief Vijay is contesting, saw 17.72 per cent polling.

4 workers die after being buried under coal slurry in Jharkhand's Dhanbad
Dhanbad (Jharkhand) (PTI): At least four workers died after being buried under coal slurry in Jharkhand's Dhanbad district on Saturday, a police official said.
The incident took place at Moonidih coal washery in the command area of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL).
"Bodies of all four workers were dug out of debris during a rescue operation," Putki police station in-charge Waqar Hussain told PTI.
The incident took place when coal slurry was being loaded into trucks by workers, during which a large chunk of slurry fell and trapped several workers underneath, officials said.
The deceased have been identified as Manik Bauri, Dinesh Bauri, Deepak Bauri, and Hemlal Gope.
Meanwhile, the family members of the deceased and local villagers placed the bodies in front of the washery gate and began a protest.
They demanded compensation, jobs for dependents and action against those responsible for the incident.
Police and administration officials are trying to pacify the protesters, an official said.
