Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Santanu Sen, who recently voiced criticism regarding the management of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has been removed from his role as the party's spokesperson.
Sen's comments came in the wake of the shocking rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor on August 9, which sparked widespread outrage. Following the incident, a mob vandalized the hospital on the night of August 14-15.
Sen, a former MP and doctor, had publicly stated that the principal of RG Kar Medical College had faced complaints for the past three years. He further alleged that the issues within the health department were not being properly communicated to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Responding to his removal, Sen said that he never spoke against the party or its leaders. "I stand by my statements—concerns about the health department are not reaching the Chief Minister and the Health Minister accurately," Sen reiterated in a video message.
He expressed disappointment, noting that while newcomers to the party are often given respect, long-time loyalists like himself face such actions. Despite the setback, Sen stated his commitment to continue serving the party.
Meanwhile, protests have intensified across West Bengal and Delhi, with doctors, medical students, and political groups demanding justice for the trainee doctor and condemning the vandalism at the hospital.
