New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor on Friday opposed the introduction of Triple Talaq Bill who said even as he is against the instant Talaw, he is opposed to criminalization of a civil offence.

Tharoor while suggesting that the scope of the bill should be extended to all communities said “abandoning or deserting wives and dependents is not unique to the Muslim community why not make a law which universally criminalizes the abandonment of family and dependents”.

“I am not defending tripple Talaq when I'm opposing the text and drafts and thrust of this bill. This bill conflicts civil law and criminal law by criminalizing the act of triple talaq which is an irregular form of divorce. Already null and void in our country post the decision of the Supreme Court in Shayara Banu v/s Union of India” Tharoor clarified.

Tharoor while calling the bill ‘class legislation pointed at one community’ said the bill is in violation of the Article 14 and 15 of the constitution. Tharoor noted “By framing a law specifically criminalizing Muslim husbands for a void act that is already declared void by the Supreme Court of India, without having an universally applicable law for desertion the bill is a textbook example of a class legislation which is pointed at one community and class. And this violates the Article 14 and 15 of the Constitution”.

Pointing that the bill does no good to improve the status of Muslim women, Tharoor said “The bill does nothing to improve the status of Muslim women who suffer from numerous other difficulties including the right unilateral divorce by their husbands being coerced to engage in Nikah halal and so on therefore this bill cannot be right under article 21 of the constitution”.

Tharoor also urged the speaker to refer the bill to the standing committee before concluding his remarks on the introduction of the bill.

Saharsa (PTI): More than 150 children were taken ill after allegedly consuming food that was part of the mid-day meal in a school in Bihar’s Saharsa district, a senior official said on Thursday.

The incident occurred at a middle school in Baluaha village of the district.

The official said that 115 children were undergoing treatment at the Sadar Hospital, while around 50 students were admitted to Mahishi Public Health Centre.

“We received information that several children fell ill after consuming the mid-day meal in Baluaha. The children were initially treated at the primary health centre, but later, many were referred to the Sadar Hospital,” Saharsa District Magistrate Deepesh Kumar told reporters.

“According to doctors, the health condition of the children has improved, but they will be kept under observation for some time. There is no need to panic. Some kids are having mild fever. They are being treated accordingly,” Kumar said.

Meanwhile, family members of some children claimed that a snake was found in the container in which cooked pulses was stored at the school.

Of the 545 students present in the school, 200 had already eaten their meals by the time the snake was spotted, and later complained of stomach ache and vomiting, they said.

Regarding the claims, the DM said food samples have been collected from the school.

“We will be able to comment on this only after the results of the tested samples arrive,” he said.
