UP cops allegedly ‘force’ minor girl to withdraw complaint after making rape accused pay Rs 50,000
Barabanki: Police in Uttar Pradesh allegedly forced a 16-year-old rape survivor to withdraw her complaint after the accused was told to pay her Rs 50,000. This incident took place in Barabanki where Ankit Verma, a 25-year-old married man kidnapped the girl and then reportedly raped her.
SP Dinesh Singh told the Times of India that the accused has been arrested and added that he has removed police station in-charge Arun Pratap Singh and suspended another cop, Manoj Kumar, over the allegations. A departmental probe has been started against the two officials. SP Dinesh Singh added that Ankit’s brother also assaulted the girl and has been detained.
According to the complaint, the teenager was abducted from outside her village on August 22, 2024 by Ankit and raped before being taken to a hotel in Ghaziabad where the sexual assault was repeated, as reported by TOI.
When the girl's condition worsened, Ankit left the teenager outside her house on August 25, 2024 and also threatened her. The family had filed a complaint soon after the incident. However, the girl was later told to withdraw her complaint after the accused paid Rs 50,000 to her.
The survivor’s uncle shared that her father was murdered in 2018, followed by her mother’s suicide the next day. Since then, the uncle has been taking care of the girl and her younger brother.
