Hyderabad: Video of policewomen dragging woman protester by hair goes viral
Hyderabad, Jan 24: A video showing two policewomen, riding a two-wheeler, dragging a woman protester by hair went viral on Wednesday evening, prompting a strong reaction from opposition BRS MLC K Kavitha who sought the intervention of the National Human Rights Commission into the matter.
Police said as per their information, the incident happened at the agricultural university at Rajendranagar here today during a protest.
The students and others at the university have been opposing allotment of some university land for the construction of a new building for the high court.
During the agitation, some of the protesters started running when the police were trying to take them into preventive custody, police said. However, the matter needs to be inquired into, they said.
It appears that the incident happened when the policewomen tried to chase them, they said.
When asked if the woman protester in the video had been identified, police said the incident had come to their notice a short while ago and that the matter would be inquired into.
When contacted, Cyberabad Police Commissioner Avinash Mohanty said the matter would be thoroughly probed.
"We will inquire thoroughly into the matter and take appropriate action," he told PTI.
BRS leader Kavitha said, the "arrogant behaviour" demands an uncoditional apology from the Telangana police.
"The recent incident involving Telangana police is deeply concerning and absolutely unacceptable. Dragging a peaceful student protester and unleashing abrasive behaviour on the protestor raises serious questions about the need for such aggressive tactics by the police," she said on 'X'.
This arrogant behavior demands an unconditional apology from the Telangana Police. Urging the Human Rights Commission to take swift and strict action against those involved," she said.
Such behaviour cannot become a norm and must be condemned by all alike, said Kavitha, daughter of BRS president and former Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.

FIR registered after drone spotted flying over ISRO's ISITE campus in Bengaluru
Bengaluru (PTI): An unmanned aerial vehicle was allegedly spotted flying over the ISRO's ISITE campus here, a designated "No Drone Zone", following which a probe has been launched, police said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at around 8.16 AM on May 2, they said.
A probe was launched following a complaint by a sub-inspector from the CISF who spotted the unidentified drone flying at a height of approximately 80 to 100 feet over the ISITE (Satellite Integration and Test Establishment) campus for about 10 to 12 seconds, police said.
According to the FIR, the ISRO ISITE campus is a highly sensitive and restricted area, designated as a "No Drone Zone." Any unauthorised aerial activity in such a sensitive zone poses a serious threat to security.
Despite being aware that this is a prohibited "No Drone Zone," some unknown individuals have carried out illegal drone activity in the restricted area, the complaint alleged.
Police said a case has been registered against unknown persons at HAL police station under Section 329(3) (criminal trespass) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, along with relevant provisions of the Aircraft Act, for operating a drone in a prohibited area without permission.
Further investigation is underway, they added.
